Ecowas Delegates Meets Ousted Niger President Bazoum, Junta Sets Transition Plan

POSTED ON August 21, 2023 •   World      BY Samuel O . Adeniyi

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) finally met the ousted President of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum.

Bazoum was met in a meeting held yesterday with the newly appointed Prime Minister of Niger, Ali Zeine, and a select few members of the Nigerien junta. The encounter comes amid a backdrop of change and transition within Niger, which has been closely watched by international observers. In a televised address lasting 12 minutes, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the leader of the Nigerien junta, emphasized the direction the country's transition of power would take. General Tchiani articulated that the transition is projected to span no more than three years, ensuring that key foundations are established before a smooth transition to civilian rule. Addressing the nation, General Tchiani asserted, "Our ambition is not to confiscate power. The transition will not exceed three years. But if there is any attack on us, it would not be a 'walk in the park' for those who intend to carry it out." The announcement of a finite timeline for the junta's control underscores a strategic intent to ensure continuity and stability in governance while acknowledging the imperative of returning authority to civilian hands. General Tchiani's address also unveiled plans for a comprehensive national dialogue, spanning 30 days, aimed at formulating vital proposals that will serve as the building blocks for a new constitution. This proactive measure reflects a trend observed in neighbouring countries, such as Mali and Burkina Faso, where similar transitional processes led to the revision and modernization of constitutions historically linked to colonial-era agreements. A notable aspect of the speech was General Tchiani's condemnation of the "illegal" and "inhumane" sanctions imposed on Niger by ECOWAS and certain Western partners. Since July 26, Niger has faced substantial trade and economic sanctions, heightening the nation's economic challenges. The timing of General Tchiani's address is significant, as it coincided with the departure of the ECOWAS delegation from Niger, marking the culmination of discussions between the junta and the regional body. In a separate development, the citizens of Niger demonstrated their solidarity with the new military administration through a massive public display. The demonstrators expressed support for the military regime, singing songs that lauded the newfound freedom from perceived colonial influences. Notably, the rally featured musicians who celebrated the junta as champions of liberation. The atmosphere was charged with patriotism as attendees waved the flags of Niger and Russia, signifying national pride and the dawn of a new era. As Niger navigates this period of transformation, the eyes of the international community remain fixed on the nation's journey toward political stability, development, and effective governance. The junta's commitment to a structured transition and engagement with its citizens speaks to a broader narrative of change in the Sahel region.
