Eberechi Eze, a midfielder for Crystal Palace, has been selected for England's squad to compete in the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Malta.
The decision to cap Eze was initially taken by the Nigeria Football Federation after extensive discussions between Eze and NFF president Amaju Pinnick.
After receiving a request to train with the Eagles in London in 2021, Pinnick declared, "I am confidently hopeful he will play for Nigeria soon."
The 24-year-old has had a strong Premier League campaign and after receiving his first formal call-up to the England senior national team, he may make his international debut.
Prior to Euro 2020, Eze was initially named in a preliminary England team but was forced to withdraw due to injury.
Southgate said of Palace star Eze, 24, "We've liked him for a long time. He had the terrible timing of becoming injured on the day we were supposed to call him in just before the Euros.
"He had a tremendously impressive season's finale. He is versatile enough to play in a few spots in the offensive line.
"Everyone I speak with has wonderful things to say about him."
On June 16, England will travel to face Malta before hosting North Macedonia at Old Trafford the following three days.
After defeating Ukraine and Italy in March, they are now in first place in Group C.
