Dr Congo Military Warns Against Ties With Fdlr Militia

POSTED ON November 22, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole

The Democratic Republic of Congo's army has issued a stern warning, vowing to apprehend and penalize any soldiers found in contact with the FDLR militia, asserting a policy of "zero tolerance" for any wrongdoing, regardless of rank.

The FDLR, a group rooted in Rwandan Hutu extremist factions that sought refuge in the Democratic Republic of Congo after perpetrating the 1994 Tutsi genocide in Rwanda, has been a source of ongoing regional tensions.

Accusations have repeatedly surfaced, implicating the DRC in collaborating with the predominantly Hutu FDLR during its efforts against the Tutsi-led M23 rebels in the tumultuous eastern Congo.

In a video statement released on Tuesday evening, Congolese army spokesman Sylvain Ekenge delivered a clear message, declaring that all soldiers, irrespective of their rank, are "strictly and unconditionally forbidden" from maintaining any contacts with the FDLR.

Ekenge emphasized the gravity of the directive, stating, "Any person contravening this instruction will be placed under arrest and will suffer the rigour of the law." The spokesman underscored the military's commitment to "zero tolerance" regarding any association with the FDLR, signaling a decisive stance against potential collaboration with the militia.

According to independent UN experts, Congolese soldiers have cooperated with FDLR fighters against the M23.

The announcement reflects the DRC's determination to address concerns about its alleged connections with the FDLR, emphasizing a commitment to maintaining internal discipline and adherence to international standards. As the region navigates complex geopolitical dynamics, the Congolese military's unequivocal stance signals an effort to assert control and align with principles that prioritize stability and security in the face of persistent challenges.
