Anambra, Nigeria - The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians not to share their National Identification Numbers (NIN) with unauthorized persons or organizations in return for money.
This caution comes after reports indicated that some residents in Anambra State were being enticed to give out their NINs for monetary gain, an act that the commission has termed illegal and subject to penalties under the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, the Data Protection Act, and the Cybercrime Act.
In a statement released on Wednesday by Head of Corporate Communications for the commission, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC noted that this illegal activity has come to their attention and that arrests have already been made in partnership with security agencies.
He remarked: “The National Identity Management Commission has been informed about the actions of unauthorized individuals or organizations allegedly requesting the submission of the National Identification Number from Anambra residents in exchange for money.”
The commission stated that after receiving reports about the nefarious activities, NIMC, in cooperation with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), acted quickly to apprehend the offenders, who are currently being interrogated and will face the full consequences of the law.
