According to the most recent ATP rankings, which were revealed on Monday, Novak Djokovic has now held the top spot for 379 consecutive weeks, while Carlos Alcaraz is still close behind.
Despite falling to Daniil Medvedev in the Dubai semifinals, the 22-time Grand Slam champion, 35, moved over Steffi Graf's all-time record last week.
Before winning his third championship in as many weeks by defeating fellow countryman Andrey Rublev in Dubai, the Russian snapped Djokovic's 20-match winning streak and unblemished start to 2023.
He moved up to the sixth position.
If Alcaraz wins the Indian Wells Masters, Djokovic will step down as the number two player in the ATP rankings; Djokovic was forced to pull out of the tournament starting this week's Sunday.
Due to his lack of a Covid-19 vaccination, the Serb is unable to enter the United States. An application for special authorization to enter the US was denied by the authorities there.
