Akwa Ibom, Nigeria (NAN) - The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has reassured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly is dedicated to creating a Constitution that is focused on the people.

This reassurance came at the conclusion of a two-day retreat hosted by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

The retreat's purpose was to evaluate various bills, gather feedback from consultants, enlighten members about the contents of the bills, prioritize them according to national importance, and prepare for public hearings in specific zones as well as a joint/harmonization meeting with the Senate.

Throughout the retreat, the committee assessed, amended, and voted on more than 151 bills assigned to it by the House.

These bills were divided into thematic categories, covering issues such as federal structure and power distribution, local government autonomy, public revenue, fiscal federation, revenue allocation, electoral reforms, and judicial reforms.

Deputy Speaker praised his colleagues for their commitment and effort, stressing that the ongoing process of constitutional review is vital in achieving a Constitution that resonates with the people's needs.

Kalu expressed satisfaction with the team's advancements, asserting that their joint efforts will result in a Constitution that authentically reflects the wishes of the populace.

He urged his colleagues to stay devoted to the mission, highlighting the significance of delivering a Constitution that embodies the character of the people’s aspirations.

The Deputy Speaker acknowledged the committee members' hard work by stating, “We take great pride in you. On behalf of the Speaker, the representatives, and the leadership of the National Assembly, I express my gratitude. You have not let us down.” He recognized the obstacles encountered by the committee but encouraged them to keep pushing forward, noting that their perseverance and commitment have paved the way for a promising future for Nigeria.

Kalu stressed the value of teamwork and collaboration, saying, “Let us maintain this unity among us. Let this not be the end of our retreats. Let us work together as partners in progress towards making this vision a reality.” He wrapped up by expressing appreciation to the committee members for being allies in progress, assuring them that both the Speaker and he are proud of their achievements.

This retreat represented a pivotal advancement towards the goal of a people-centered Constitution. The initiatives of the committee showcase the National Assembly's dedication to producing a Constitution that genuinely reflects the sentiments of the populace. As this process advances, Nigerians can anticipate a Constitution that embodies their aspirations and fosters national unity.

The commitment demonstrated by the 10th National Assembly to produce a people-oriented Constitution is indeed a promising development. As the constitutional review process progresses, Nigerians can look forward to a Constitution that enhances their welfare, security, and prosperity.
