Defamation: Emefiele Threatens N25 Billion Legal Suit Against Akpabio

POSTED ON February 21, 2024 •   Local News      BY Samuel O . Adeniyi

Nigeria's former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, is taking legal action against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, demanding N25 billion in damages for alleged defamation.

This follows statements made by Akpabio suggesting Emefiele's policies were responsible for the country's economic hardships.

Akpabio's Accusations Spark Lawsuit:

Emefiele, through his lawyers, accuses Akpabio of making "false, distorted, and clearly aimed at disparaging his character" statements in a video aired on Channels Television.

Akpabio reportedly said the government was unsure of what charges to bring against Emefiele, suggesting his actions led to Nigeria's economic woes.

Emefiele Refutes Claims, Demands Apology and Compensation:

Emefiele's legal team rejects these claims, emphasizing that no policy was implemented without approval from the President and Federal Executive Council, of which Akpabio was a member.

They argue Akpabio's statements are not only false but also undermine the court's integrity as Emefiele faces ongoing legal proceedings.

The letter demands an immediate retraction of Akpabio's statements and a published apology. Also, they request N25 billion in compensation for the alleged damage to Emefiele's reputation.

Failure to Comply Leads to Court Action:

The letter warns that failure to comply with these demands will result in legal action against Akpabio.

This move sets the stage for a potential high-profile defamation case with significant financial implications.

Key Points:

  • Emefiele accuses the senate president of defamatory statements regarding economic hardship.
  • Akpabio allegedly questioned Emefiele's actions while in office.
  • Emefiele demands retraction, apology, and N25 billion compensation.
  • Legal action is threatened if demands are not met.

Possible Implications:

  • This case could shed light on the factors behind Nigeria's economic challenges.
  • The outcome could impact the public perception of both individuals and institutions.
  • The legal battle could have broader implications for freedom of speech and accountability.

This developing story highlights the complex interplay between politics, finance, and legal matters in Nigeria.

As the case unfolds, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how these accusations and demands are addressed.
