The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has formally requested approval from the Federal Government to introduce diesel and aviation fuel into the domestic market. The decision is now pending approval from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the regulatory body overseeing midstream and downstream petroleum operations in Nigeria.
Currently, refined products are stored in the refinery's storage tanks, awaiting the green light, as revealed in checks conducted by Sunday Vanguard over the weekend.
In an official statement, the company announced, "We have initiated the production of diesel and aviation fuel, and these products are anticipated to enter the market within this month, pending regulatory approvals. This marks a significant day for Nigeria, showcasing our capability to execute large capital projects and signaling a transformative moment for our country."
The refinery, situated 25 kilometers from the shore, has received six million barrels of crude oil, with the first delivery occurring on December 12, 2023, and the most recent cargo on January 8, 2024. Boasting the ability to load 2900 trucks daily at its truck-loading gantries, the refinery's products will meet Euro V specifications. The design aligns with global standards such as the World Bank, US EPA, European emission norms, and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) emission/effluent norms, utilizing state-of-the-art technology.
Acknowledging the pivotal role played by bankers, financiers, and the Government of Lagos State, under Babajide Sanwo-Olu's leadership, the company expressed gratitude for their support in overcoming challenges during the project's execution.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and valuable guidance throughout the project. He also thanked the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited), Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), NMDPRA, and Nigerians for their support.
Chairman of International Energy Services, Dr. Diran Fawibe, hailed the development as a welcome move with potential positive ripple effects, including the creation of additional job opportunities, completing the industry cycle.
