A temporary injunction prohibiting the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) from initiating a strike as scheduled for Wednesday has been issued by the National Industrial Court in Abuja, pending the outcome of the move on notice.
The Federal Government is named as the applicant in the lawsuit with the NLC and the TUC listed as the defendants, and it is dated NICN/ABJ/158/2023. Justice O. Y. Anuwe issued the ruling on Monday.
As it set June 19 for hearing, the court also ordered that the defendants be served right away with the originating processes in the lawsuit.
Prior to the court decision, the NLC was prepared to start a nationwide strike on Wednesday.
After an emergency meeting of the union's National Executive Council (NEC) on Friday in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero declared that the government, in particular the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, had until next Wednesday to reinstate the old price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol.
Ajaero had also said that if the Federal Government didn't comply with the deadline, there would be nationwide demonstrations that would go indefinitely.
