The Federal High Court in Lagos has instructed former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, to reveal the specifics of the agreement between the Federal Government and X (formerly Twitter) regarding the lifting of the ban imposed on the microblogging site during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba in May 2024, and the certified true copy of the judgment was released last Friday, as disclosed by the Deputy Director of the Social Economic Rights and Accountability Project, Kolawole Oluwadare.
The ban on Twitter (now X) was officially imposed by the FG on June 4, 2021, but was lifted by Buhari in January 2022 after 222 days.
The former minister had previously stated that Twitter negotiated with the Nigerian Government following the suspension of the microblogging site, in response to claims by a former senior X official that there was no negotiation.
SERAP had filed a Freedom of Information suit demanding disclosure of the agreement, expressing concerns about its compliance with the human rights of Nigerians online.
