ABUJA, Nigeria (NAN) - The Senate has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold by-elections for the vacant Senate positions in Edo Central and Anambra South.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this request during Tuesday's plenary session, where he officially announced that both seats were vacant and stressed the importance of swift electoral measures.
Akpabio remarked, “These seats are now vacant. I urge INEC to organize elections in accordance with the constitution to fill these vacancies.”
INEC had indicated earlier in January 2025 that it was waiting for an official request from the Senate before moving forward with the Anambra South by-election.
The Anambra South Senatorial District has been unrepresented since July 2024, following the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
Likewise, the Edo Central Senatorial Seat became vacant after Monday Okpebholo assumed the position of Edo governor in November 2024.
