Following the recent update on the Cholera Outbreak in Lagos, which indicated 350 suspected cases and 15 deaths, Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, has announced that the number of cholera cases has now risen to 401 across Lagos, with the highest numbers recorded in Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa.
Dr. Ogunyemi made this announcement today after meeting with members of the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) to provide an update on the outbreak.
She also mentioned that the death toll has increased to 21, which is six more than the previously reported 15 fatalities.
She explained that the increase in cases was expected due to the Ileya festivities, which involved large gatherings.
She noted that suspected cases are decreasing in various local government areas (LGAs) due to interventions and surveillance efforts by the State Government.
Dr. Ogunyemi emphasized that the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other related agencies, is actively monitoring the situation and implementing programs to control the spread of cholera.
She stated, "The Ministry of Health, along with the State Ministry of Environment and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), is continuing to collect samples from water sources, food, and beverages to identify the source of contamination. We are also intensifying our surveillance in communities, especially in affected local government areas."
She mentioned the collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Tertiary Education to ensure safety measures are in place as schools reopen.
Dr. Ogunyemi urged residents to remain cautious, maintain good hand hygiene, and participate in community sanitation activities to prevent the spread of cholera.
