The National Biosafety Management Agency has urged the public to be cautious regarding the recent outbreak of cholera in several states across Nigeria.
Head of Information and Communications for NBMA, Mrs. Gloria Ogbaki, quoted the Director-General, Dr. Agnes Asagbra, as emphasizing the need for vigilance.
Asagbra stated that with Nigeria reporting 30 deaths and 1,141 suspected cases of the disease, it is crucial for Nigerians to exercise caution, especially as the country approaches the festive period of the Salah celebrations.
Cholera, a highly contagious bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated food or water, has been identified in several states including Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos.
Asagbra also mentioned that NBMA is working closely with health authorities to monitor and implement measures to contain the spread of the disease.
She also called on Nigerians to imbibe various hygiene practices such as boiling drinking water or using certified water purification methods.
She emphasized the importance of thorough handwashing with soap and water, particularly before eating or handling food.
The Director-General also encouraged Nigerians to consistently wash their hands with soap and water after using the restroom, cook food thoroughly, and consume it while it is still hot.
She recommended that Nigerians avoid consuming raw foods like fruits and vegetables unless they are able to be peeled or washed with safe water, and to maintain a clean environment and properly dispose of waste to prevent contamination.
The NBMA urges all Nigerians to remain vigilant and follow these hygiene practices to protect themselves and their families from cholera.
She urged Nigerians to stay alert and report any cases of cholera to the nearest hospital.
