China Says Taiwan's Submarine Strategy 'Idiotic Nonsense'

POSTED ON November 8, 2023 •   GLOBAL NEWS      BY Segun Adewole
China's defense ministry has strongly criticized Taiwan's plan to protect itself from encirclement by China through the deployment of its first domestically built submarines, referring to it as "idiotic nonsense." When asked about Taiwan's intention to utilize these submarines as a means of preventing China's People's Liberation Army from gaining access to the Pacific and encircling the island, Ministry Spokesman Wu Qian stated, "No matter how many weapons the DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) authorities build or purchase, they cannot stop the general trend of national reunification." Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, has long been a contentious issue in Sino-Taiwanese relations, with Beijing considering the island a renegade province and aiming for eventual reunification. Taiwan, on the other hand, views itself as a sovereign state with its own government and military. The decision to develop domestically built submarines is part of Taiwan's efforts to bolster its defense capabilities in the face of mounting pressure from China. This move is seen as a response to Beijing's increased military activities in the Taiwan Strait and its repeated calls for reunification. China's criticism of Taiwan's submarine strategy highlights the deepening divide between the two sides and raises concerns about the potential for military confrontations in the region. It underscores the need for diplomatic efforts to address these issues and maintain stability in the volatile Taiwan Strait. The international community closely watches developments in the Taiwan Strait, as any escalation of tensions between China and Taiwan could have far-reaching implications for regional security and stability.
