The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, praised the troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA for their courageous commitment and dedication in addressing security issues in the North-West region.
Gen. Musa conveyed his commendation on Tuesday during a strategic Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) meeting at the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto.
Represented by Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, he cautioned the troops against indiscipline and complacency in their operations.
He urged them to stay vigilant and dedicated to civil-military cooperation at all levels, emphasizing the importance of following established regulations at all times.
He also acknowledged the operational successes achieved by the division under Operation FASAN YAMMA and expressed his satisfaction with their ongoing weekly reports to headquarters.
“This battle is a just cause; don’t let your guard down, as your adversaries are vigilant. The 8 Division is continually praised for its efforts. You all deserve recognition and encouragement, as do your General Officer Commanding (GOC) and every officer involved in Operation FASAN YAMMA,” he stated.
The CDS highlighted the necessity of unity among security forces and fostering a strong connection with local communities. He pointed out that triumph in the fight against insurgency and banditry relies on both firepower and the trust of the civilians.
“Encourage people to approach you, rather than flee from you. The best intelligence comes from the civilians you protect,” he added.
Additionally, the GOC of the 8 Division, Maj. Gen. Ibikunle Ajose also expressed his appreciation for the recognition. “The CDS's leadership philosophy reminds us that true success in asymmetric warfare isn't just about tactical victories, but also about winning the hearts and minds of the people,” he remarked.
Maj. Gen. Ajose reiterated the moral imperative of their mission as protectors of the vulnerable, which must be paired with empathy, discipline, and justice.
“We are relatable; we have children, siblings, and relatives, and we all hope that everyone returns home safely, not in coffins. Nigeria is united. The bandits will not prevail, and our Armed Forces will remain vigilant,” he assured.
