In this insightful interview, we had the privilege of speaking with Sonibare Samad, a 29-year-old Metallurgical and materials engineer based in Nigeria, seeking a kidney transplant.

Samad, who works with a private engineering company, shares his journey, aspirations, and particularly about his health. 

Having been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and enduring a life-altering incident in 2023, Samad sheds light on the financial strain of ongoing dialysis and the hope for a kidney transplant.

Interviewer: Good afternoon, and thank you for joining us today. Could you please introduce yourself to our audience?

Sonibare Samad: Good afternoon. My name is Sonibare Samad, and I'm a 29-year-old metallurgical and materials engineer. I work with a private engineering company here in Nigeria.

Interviewer: It's great to have you here, Samad. Can you share a bit about your background and family?

Sonibare Samad: Certainly. I come from a family of five, including three brothers. I'm the eldest. Aside from my professional work, I'm passionate about humanitarian activities, playing soccer, and indulging in video games for fun.

Interviewer: That's interesting. Can you tell us more about yourself, your aspirations, and the challenges you've faced?

Sonibare Samad: Sure. I see myself as a young Nigerian aspiring to improve life for myself and my family. Growing up in a financially constrained household has been challenging, and I strive to make life better for my parents and siblings. Despite working professionally, I'm also actively involved in humanitarian activities. I played soccer during my university days and enjoyed video games for recreation.

Interviewer: You mentioned facing health challenges. Could you elaborate on that?

Sonibare Samad: Certainly. In 2021, I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, which was initially manageable. Unfortunately, in April 2023, I experienced a gunshot incident during a robbery, leading to complications and a significant decline in my kidney function. Since then, I've been on dialysis, facing financial and emotional difficulties, especially after losing my job.

Interviewer: That's indeed a tough situation. Can you walk us through the financial aspects of your treatment?

Sonibare Samad: The financial burden has been substantial. Dialysis in Nigeria costs between 35,000 to 40,000 Naira per session, and I require multiple sessions per week. Additionally, I've had to invest in medications, blood transfusions, and injections to manage my health. The overall cost has been around 120,000 to 150,000 Naira weekly.

Interviewer: We understand you're seeking support through a GoFundMe campaign. Can you explain how the fundraising figure was determined?

Sonibare Samad: Certainly. The total figure of 22 million Naira was calculated to cover the expenses of kidney transplant surgery, pre-transplant care, immunosuppressants, and ongoing post-transplant medication.

The breakdown includes 18 million Naira for the transplant itself, 2.5 million Naira for pre-transplant care, and the rest allocated to cover the costs of immunosuppressants, which are essential for life after the transplant.
