Ex-Cbn Governor Emefiele Freed From Kuje Prison

بواسطة Samuel O . Adeniyi 23 ديسمبر 2023 0

Following weeks of speculation, Ex- Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele has been released from Kuje prison.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed his release on Saturday, stating that he met the requirements set for his bail.

"Godwin Emefiele has been released," NCoS spokesman Umar Abubakar exclusively told DAILY POST. "He fulfilled his bail conditions on Friday and was subsequently released."

This development comes a month after Justice Hamza Muazu granted Emefiele bail on November 22, 2023.

The bail, set at N300 million, included a stringent condition requiring sureties to possess landed properties in Abuja's Maitama District.

Until then, Justice Muazu had ordered Emefiele to remain in custody.

Recall that Emefiele faced charges of alleged N1.2 billion procurement fraud, brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Federal Government.

However, the news of his release coincides with the emergence of a separate financial scandal implicating Emefiele.

Jim Obazee, the special investigator appointed to probe the CBN, recently submitted an interim report alleging widespread financial misconduct by the former Governor.

The full details of Obazee's report and Emefiele's legal proceedings remain under scrutiny.

While Emefiele's release signifies progress towards due process, the ongoing investigation and potential involvement in other financial irregularities cast a shadow over his past leadership at the CBN.
