3 Fear Dead As Fire Gut Canadian Embassy In Abuja

A fire broke out at the Canadian Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria on Monday, killing three people and injuring one.

A section of the Embassy which is located at 13010G, Palm Close, Diplomatic Drive, Central Business District in Abuja was on fire, according to a witness report.

The fire broke out in the embassy's power-generating plant while it was being repaired.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with The Guardian said that the fire broke out around 11:30 PM and that the flames were engulfing the powerhouse within minutes.

Three people were killed in the fire, while one person was able to escape through the roof of the powerhouse.

Firefighting trucks arrived at the scene and were able to put out the fire. Rescue operations are still ongoing.

Staff of the embassy were evacuated to safety under trees and other safe spaces in the embassy enclosure.

An ambulance arrived at the scene to evacuate those who were injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

However, it is believed to have started due to an electrical fault in the power generating plant.

The Canadian Embassy is the office of the High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria.

It provides services to Canadians visiting and living in Nigeria and also extends its services to Equatorial Guinea and Sao Tome and Principle.

Amongst the services rendered are Adoption and surrogacy, birth abroad, Marriage abroad, Citizenship services Notarial services, Passport services and more.
