Carl Cruz has been chosen as the next managing director and chief executive officer of Airtel Nigeria, taking over for C Surendran on Friday, May 5.
Cruz will bring his 31 years of expertise from the private sector, which includes businesses in Africa and Asia, according to the telecoms operator.
Cruz will serve as the regional operations director and report to Segun Ogunsanya, the CEO of the Airtel Africa Group, according to a disclosed statement dated May 4.
Cruz served as Unilever's CEO and MD in Nigeria, Ghana, and Francophone Africa prior to his appointment. In addition, he oversaw Hindustan Unilever India and Unilever Philippines while serving as chairman and MD of Unilever Sri Lanka.

"Cruz most recently served as the managing director and chief executive officer of Unilever in West Africa, where he was in charge of three publicly traded operational entities that included Nigeria, Ghana, and Francophone Africa."
"He served as an executive director on the board of Unilever Nigeria Plc and as a non-executive director on the board of Unilever Ghana, where he represented Unilever as a shareholder." the company added.
Ogunsanya said the following about Cruz's hiring: "Cruz brings to Airtel Africa a wealth of business experience, exceptional track record, and strong values."
