The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso has received support from a former Emir of Kano and ex-CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido who urged him to proceed with the relocation plans.
The central bank had recently declared intentions to decongest the Abuja headquarters and relocate some office departments to Lagos.
Sanusi however pledged his support for the move, however declaring that it is eminently sensible due to the larger infrastructure capacity in the Lagos office.
He dismissed the opposition and controversies that have surrounded the apex bank's decision particularly from the Northern political class. Critics argue that such relocation could widen economic disparities between the North and South.
The former Northern Emirate however advised the current CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, not to succumb to political pressures surrounding the contentious move. He emphasized the importance of maintaining principled decisions and ignoring the noise generated by political considerations.
He further revealed that he had contemplated a similar move during his time as CBN governor but was unable to execute the plan due to time constraints. According to his vision, he would have relocated certain operations to Lagos, particularly the Financial System Stability (FSS), while key departments reporting directly to the governor would remain in Abuja.
