Canada Approves Updated Moderna Covid Vaccine

POSTED ON November 8, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole
As COVID-19 infections begin to rise once again, Canada has taken a proactive step in mitigating the spread of the disease by approving an updated version of the Moderna COVID vaccine. The new vaccine targets the Omicron XBB.1.5 subvariant and has been approved for use in individuals aged six months and older. This move comes shortly after the United States approved modified versions of both Moderna and Pfizer vaccines to combat an Omicron sublineage. According to Health Canada's chief medical advisor Supriya Sharma, the updated Moderna vaccine is expected to provide effective protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and death caused by the currently circulating variants. During a news conference held in Ottawa, Sharma emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating that it remains one of the most efficient ways to safeguard ourselves against serious outcomes. "The emergence of new variants highlights the need for continued vigilance and adaptability in our fight against COVID-19," Sharma noted. "By staying ahead of the game with updated vaccines, we can help prevent the spread of the virus and protect those who may be most vulnerable to its effects." While most Canadians have received at least two doses of a COVID vaccine, the protection afforded by these vaccines does wane over time. As such, officials are encouraging individuals to get boosters to maintain their immunity. With the latest approval of the updated Moderna vaccine, there is renewed hope that the country can stem the tide of rising infections. Sharma also revealed that Pfizer-BioNTech's revised vaccine and a proposal for an updated shot from Novavax are being reviewed on a priority basis. This suggests that additional options may soon become available to bolster Canada's arsenal against COVID-19. Following a particularly challenging 2022-2023 respiratory virus season, which saw hospitals overwhelmed by a combination of influenza, COVID, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) cases, health officials are understandably concerned about the potential impact of another severe winter. By rolling out the updated vaccines this fall, they aim to mitigate the burden on healthcare facilities and keep the population safe."We cannot let our guard down," warned Sharma. "The recent surge in cases serves as a stark reminder that COVID-19 has not disappeared. We must continue to take proactive measures to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities."
