Joy erupted in the vibrant city of Marrakech as Nigeria's Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala were crowned Africa's best footballers at the prestigious CAF Awards ceremony.

Osimhen's Triumph:

  • Ending a 24-Year Wait: "This is a dream come true for me and for Nigeria," declared Osimhen, his voice brimming with emotion as he lifted the trophy. "It's been 24 long years since a Nigerian last won this award," he added, acknowledging his predecessor, Kanu Nwankwo, in 1999.
  • Facing Fierce Competition: "The competition was tough," admitted Osimhen, recognizing the talents of fellow nominees Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi. "But I gave my all for Napoli and for Nigeria, and I'm grateful for the recognition."
  • Record-Breaking Season: Osimhen's 26 Serie A goals not only propelled Napoli to their first Scudetto in 33 years but also shattered George Weah's record for the highest-scoring African player in the Italian top flight.
  • Double Crown Holder: "I'm the first player to win both Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards in different seasons," Osimhen proudly declared, a testament to his consistent excellence.
  • Gratitude and Inspiration: Osimhen expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his coach, Emmanuel Amunike, his role model Didier Drogba, and numerous African legends who inspired him. He also dedicated the award to aspiring young footballers, urging them to chase their dreams with dedication.

Oshoala's Unmatched Reign:

  • Sixth-Time Champion: Oshoala rewrote history by claiming her sixth Women's Player of the Year title, surpassing contenders Thembi Klagtlana and Barbara Banda.
  • Super Falcons Soar: Oshoala's individual triumph was complemented by the Super Falcons' recognition as the Best Women's National Team of the Year, a testament to their impressive performance at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
  • Nnadozie's Inspiration: Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Super Falcons' standout goalkeeper, received the Goalkeeper of the Year (Women) award. Her emotional speech encouraged aspiring young girls in Africa to pursue their dreams in football, emphasizing that dedication and hard work pave the way to success.
