The military government of Burkina Faso has abolished the Independent National Electoral Commission, citing high administrative expenses and a desire to align with its foreign policy ideology.
Under the leadership of Junta head Ibraheem Traore, the electoral duties will be reassigned to the Ministry of Territorial Administration to strengthen national sovereignty in the face of ongoing jihadist challenges.
Emile Zerbo, the Minister of Territorial Administration, confirmed the decision, stating that the electoral body costs the government $870,000 annually, which he considers excessive.
Following the cancellation of the July 2024 elections, the council of ministers approved a plan to eliminate the commission to distance itself from its former colonial power.
"This decision will enhance our sovereign oversight of the electoral process while reducing foreign influence," the minister noted.
The military regime in Burkina Faso places a strong emphasis on sovereignty and has moved away from associations with its former colonial ruler, France.
