Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat singer, has been detained after being accused of assaulting a police officer in Lagos, according to Inspector-General of Police Usman Baba.

A prompt and thorough investigation into the immediate and underlying cause(s) of the alleged attack has also been mandated by the IG, along with the prosecution of the suspect in accordance with the findings.

The musician claimed in a social media post that the police officer in issue had tried to kill him and his family on Saturday night.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adéjb, commented on the incident in a statement released on Saturday night that our correspondent was able to obtain. He said, "The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was caught on camera assaulting a police officer in uniform.

"The IG has also mandated a prompt and thorough investigation into the immediate and underlying cause(s) of the assault and the prosecution of the defendant in accordance with that inquiry.

"IG Baba assures Nigerians that disrespect for official symbols will not be tolerated, and those who commit such heinous crimes will undoubtedly face justice"

Meanwhile, Seun Kuti highlighted that the police officer in question had expressed regret for allegedly trying to kill him and his family in a Saturday night Instagram post.

"He attempted to kill me and my family, Kuti alleged. I have the evidence, but I don't chase clout.

“He has apologised and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no lose his job.”

However, Mr. Kuti stated in another Instagram post that "he welcomed the probe and would provide full cooperation when the IG ordered his arrest. I also ask the IG to bring charges against everyone who is at fault."
