The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of Martins Vincent Otse, citing multiple petitions alleging financial crimes as the basis for his apprehension.
In a statement released by the Commission through their official Facebook handle on Tuesday, the EFCC said it invited Otse for questioning following a series of petitions bordering on “grave allegations of financial malfeasance.” Despite being served several invitations through known addresses and communication channels, Otse reportedly refused to honour any of them.
“The petitions pertain to grave allegations of financial malfeasance which cannot be ignored by the Commission,” the EFCC stated, emphasizing that its actions were solely guided by its mandate to combat economic and financial crimes.
Addressing claims that the arrest may have been triggered by Otse’s critical remarks about the Commission, the EFCC clarified that while such attacks are “condemnable,” they were not the reason for his detention. The agency noted that other law enforcement bodies may investigate those issues separately.
“The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the Commission. The appropriate Remand Order was obtained in this regard,” the Commission added.
Otse has been granted administrative bail and is expected to regain his freedom upon meeting all bail conditions.
The EFCC also responded to public reactions surrounding the arrest, expressing appreciation for the interest shown by Nigerians. It, however, called for restraint in speculations regarding the motives behind its actions.
“The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour,” the statement concluded, assuring that charges will be filed against Otse once investigations are completed.
In response to the press statement on the EFCC Facebook official handle, Nigerians, including human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters Omoyele Sowore, said, “ This press release is vague, vacuous and self-serving. What was the offense that led to his violent arrest and detention? “
Emmanuel Ocheni in his comment on the press statement said “ou should have gathered your facts and be ready to charge him to Court before going for his arrest. I think it is highly unprofessional and appears as though EFCC acted on impulse by first arresting him in such a crude manner, and now have to wait to gather evidence before charging him to Court. I will strongly recommend that some officials of EFCC undergo some international trainings. It will help us as a Country alot.
