Booker Prize-Winning Novelist Arundhati Roy Faces Possible Prosecution

POSTED ON October 10, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole
Renowned Indian author and Booker Prize winner, Arundhati Roy, may face prosecution over a speech she delivered in 2010 about the sensitive issue of Kashmir, according to reports in local media. Arundhati Roy, aged 61, is not only celebrated for her literary works but also known for her activism and vocal criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, making her a polarizing figure in India. A criminal complaint alleging sedition had remained in India's slow-moving criminal justice system since its initial filing in 2010. However, on Tuesday, it was reported that V.K. Saxena, a top official in the administration governing New Delhi, had given the green light for the case to proceed in court. Saxena's directive cited sufficient evidence for a case against Arundhati Roy and her co-defendants related to "speeches at a public function" in the capital, as reported by The Hindu newspaper. The original complaint accuses Roy and others of advocating the secession of Kashmir from India during their speeches. Kashmir is a highly sensitive topic in India, as the region is partially governed by India and also claimed in full by both India and neighboring Pakistan. The dispute has led to two wars and numerous skirmishes between the two nations. Since the insurgency against Indian rule erupted in Kashmir in 1989, tens of thousands of lives, including those of Indian troops, militants, and civilians, have been lost in the conflict. In 2010, Roy's remarks from the panel discussion on this subject led to protests outside her New Delhi residence. Two of Arundhati Roy's co-defendants have passed away in the 13 years since the case was initially lodged. Roy's literary achievements include being the first non-expatriate Indian to win the prestigious Booker Prize for her debut novel, "The God of Small Things," in 1997. Her advocacy extends to passionate essays addressing the struggles of India's impoverished and marginalized populations, often drawing criticism from the country's elite. In recent years, Roy has emerged as a prominent critic of Prime Minister Modi's government, which has faced accusations from rights groups and others of targeting activists through criminal prosecution and curbing free speech. Reporters Without Borders has expressed concerns about the state of press freedom in India, with rankings dropping from 140 to 161 since 2014, including an 11-place decline in the past year.
