Blinken Arrives In Kyiv, Unveils Over $1Bn In Aid

POSTED ON December 30, 2023 •   Energy      BY Segun Adewole
In the midst of ongoing Russian airstrikes on Ukraine, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Kyiv on Wednesday for his fourth visit since the commencement of Moscow's invasion. Blinken's visit comes as the United States prepares to announce more than $1 billion in new aid to support Ukraine's efforts against Russia. Kyiv has reported some successes in its counteroffensive against Russian forces this week, marking a significant development in the ongoing conflict. As Blinken landed in Ukraine, the Ukrainian army continued its "offensive operations" toward the war-torn town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, which fell to Russian forces in May, as well as the southern city of Melitopol, currently occupied by Moscow. The Ukrainian forces reported success in the vicinity of the southern villages of Robotyne and Novoprokopivka. Furthermore, Ukrainian military claims strategic victories on the southern front that open pathways toward Moscow-annexed Crimea. A US State Department official, en route to Kyiv, informed reporters that they would announce "more than a billion dollars in new US funding for Ukraine." This aid is poised to bolster Ukraine's efforts in the ongoing conflict. Hours before Blinken's arrival, Kyiv experienced a Russian missile strike that authorities confirmed had caused no casualties but did ignite a fire outside the capital, underscoring the volatile situation. Blinken's visit coincides with a significant change within Kyiv's military leadership. President Volodymyr Zelensky recently dismissed Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, who had served throughout the Russian invasion, following allegations of corruption related to defense ministry contracts. Parliament subsequently approved Zelensky's nominee, Rustem Umerov, to replace Reznikov. Umerov, a prominent figure within the Crimean Tatar community, possesses extensive contacts in Turkey and the Middle East. The US official described Blinken's visit as timely, coming several months into Kyiv's counteroffensive and preceding a second winter of full-scale war, amid concerns over energy security. Discussions during Blinken's visit will focus on providing support tailored to Ukraine's current phase of the battle, with an emphasis on reinforcing air defense capabilities, deemed a "high priority." The United States has previously supplied key weaponry to Ukraine, enabling its advances during the summer months. However, progress in Kyiv's counteroffensive has faced challenges, including heavily mined territories and formidable Russian defense lines. The Kremlin responded dismissively to Blinken's visit, with a spokesperson stating that US aid would not "influence the course of the special military operation," using Moscow's terminology for its offensive. The spokesperson also accused Washington of seeking to perpetuate the conflict, remarking that the US aims to "keep Ukraine in a state of war, to wage this war till the last Ukrainian."
