Biden Applauds Tentative Agreement To End Hollywood Writers' Strike

POSTED ON November 8, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole
US President Joe Biden celebrated a breakthrough on Monday as a tentative deal was reached to end the monthslong strike by Hollywood writers, which had paralyzed the film and TV industry. In a statement, President Biden commended both the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for their efforts in reaching this tentative agreement. He emphasized the significance of writers resuming their crucial work in storytelling, not only for the nation but for the entire world. The president also noted that the deal included important provisions regarding the use of artificial intelligence, ensuring the protection of writers' creative rights. He acknowledged that the negotiations had been challenging, but the outcome was a testament to the effectiveness of collective bargaining between employers and unions. President Biden took this opportunity to draw attention to another ongoing labor struggle – the strike by autoworkers against the "Big Three" vehicle manufacturers. He emphasized the need for autoworkers to receive their fair share of profits, echoing his commitment to workers across various industries. Tomorrow, President Biden plans to stand in solidarity with autoworkers by visiting the picket line in Detroit. He issued a call to all employers, reminding them that workers, whether they are writers, actors, or autoworkers, deserve a just and equitable portion of the value generated by their labor. As the Hollywood writers prepare to return to their craft, the tentative agreement brings hope for a revival of the entertainment industry. President Biden's support for fair labor practices resonates not only with those directly affected by these strikes but also with workers nationwide who seek fair compensation for their contributions.
