Pope Francis

As people reflect on the remarkable life and influence of Pope Francis, there are lesser-known details about the Argentine-born pontiff that reveal more about the man behind the iconic white robe. Known for his humility, progressive outlook, and compassion for the underprivileged, Pope Francis, whose birth name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, has experienced a life filled with unexpected turns and hidden stories. Here are  fascinating facts that might surprise many:

A Lung Lost, but Unbroken Spirit

In his teenage years, Francis endured a serious infection that resulted in part of one lung being surgically removed. Nevertheless, he has maintained excellent health and vitality throughout his decades of service in the church.

From Bouncer to Spiritual Leader

Before entering the priesthood, Bergoglio served as a bouncer in a Buenos Aires nightclub — a job he has spoken about with a blend of pride and humor, highlighting how it helped him relate to individuals from diverse backgrounds.

The Pope Who Embraced Chemistry

Prior to delving into theology, he studied chemistry and worked as a chemical technician. His analytical approach has significantly shaped his perspectives on theology and environmental issues.

Unsung Heroism in Troubling Times

During Argentina’s military dictatorship in the 1970s, then-Father Bergoglio protected individuals targeted by the junta, putting his own safety at risk to save lives. Although the details of his involvement are debated, it is generally regarded in a positive light.

A Passionate Dancer

Pope Francis has a longstanding appreciation for tango, the traditional dance of Argentina. “I love tango a lot,” he has said, fondly remembering his youth in the lively neighborhoods of Buenos Aires.

Culinary Skills

Known for his simple lifestyle, Francis often cooked for himself as an Archbishop and reportedly still enjoys cooking when he can, even within the Vatican.

Rejecting the Papal Residence

In a break from tradition, Francis chose not to reside in the Apostolic Palace, opting instead for a humble room at Casa Santa Marta, the Vatican guesthouse, where he lives among fellow clergy and staff.

Devoted Soccer Fan

A die-hard supporter of San Lorenzo, one of Argentina's leading football teams, Pope Francis kept his membership card and would occasionally check match updates, even while shepherding the global Church.

Simplifying Papal Transport

While previous popes favored luxurious vehicles, Francis opts for simpler modes of transport, often seen driving a Fiat 500L or Ford Focus, aligning with his enduring message of simplicity and environmental consciousness.

A Pope Who Engages with the People

Francis has taken the time to personally read and reply to letters from ordinary individuals worldwide, particularly those from the underprivileged or those in distress.
