Bangladesh Beat Pakistan In Asian Games Bronze Medal Match

POSTED ON October 6, 2023 •   Sports      BY Segun Adewole
In a thrilling encounter at the Asian Games, Bangladesh secured a dramatic six-wicket victory over Pakistan in a rain-shortened bronze medal match. The electrifying climax saw Rakibul Hasan sealing the win with a boundary off the final ball. Persistent rain disrupted proceedings at the Zhejiang University of Technology Pingfeng Cricket Field, leading to a delayed start. When play eventually commenced, Pakistan found themselves batting after losing the toss. They managed to post 48-1 off five overs before inclement weather once again intervened. Mirza Baig emerged as Pakistan's standout performer, remaining unbeaten on 32. The intervention of rain necessitated the application of the DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) method, which revised Bangladesh's target to 65 runs off their allotted five overs. What followed was a nail-biting contest that unfolded with four wickets down. Amidst a cool day, Bangladesh faced adversity early on, losing two wickets in the first three deliveries. However, they rallied, leaving them with a requirement of 20 runs off the final over, bowled by wrist spinner Sufiyan Muqeem. Yasir Ali, contributing an impressive 38 runs, hammered two towering sixes, only to fall on the fifth ball as he attempted another mighty stroke. With the scores level and a boundary needed off the last delivery, Rakibul Hasan rose to the occasion, smashing a boundary that set off jubilant celebrations among the Bangladesh team. The enthralling encounter between Bangladesh and Pakistan showcased the spirit of competition and the unpredictability of T20 cricket. As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the gold medal match between India and Afghanistan later in the day, this memorable contest underlines the excitement and intensity of the Asian Games cricket tournament.
