Bangladesh Battles Worst Dengue Outbreak; 1,000 Deaths Recorded

POSTED ON October 2, 2023 •   GLOBAL NEWS      BY Segun Adewole
Bangladesh is grappling with its most severe recorded outbreak of dengue fever, with over 1,000 deaths reported this year alone. The alarming increase in dengue cases is linked to climate change, which is altering the disease's transmission patterns and making it a growing global health concern. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness prevalent in tropical regions, causing high fevers, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, and, in its gravest form, internal bleeding that can prove fatal. According to data from Bangladesh's Directorate General of Health Services, published on Sunday night, the country has witnessed 1,006 deaths from dengue, with over 200,000 confirmed cases. Notably, this year's death toll has already surpassed the cumulative total for every previous year since 2000, as revealed by the agency's former director, Be-Nazir Ahmed. "This is a massive health event, both in Bangladesh and around the world," Ahmed emphasized in an interview with AFP on Monday. The scale of the outbreak is staggering, particularly when compared to 2022, when 281 dengue-related fatalities were recorded for the entire year. Tragically, among the deceased are 112 children aged 15 and under, including infants. The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded the alarm about the accelerated spread of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases like chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika, attributing this trend to climate change. Rising temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, and shifts in mosquito habitats have created conditions conducive to the proliferation of disease-carrying mosquitoes.
