Nigerian singer Teniola Apata, known popularly as Teni has urged the Super Eagles to go all out against South Africa in the semi-finals of the ongoing African Cup of Nations, or AFCON, on Wednesday.
She challenged star striker Victor Osimhen and his teammates to smash the South Africans to avenge some Nigerian musicians' setbacks at the hands of South African vocalist Tyla at the 66th Grammys.
Nigerian Afrobeat superstars Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Davido, Asake, and Olamide were overlooked at the 66th Grammys on Sunday.
Tyla, the only non-Nigerian candidate in the maiden Best African Music Performance category, won the award.
She said: “South Africa, Tyla’s ‘Water.’ Alright. [Victor] Osimhen, over to you. [Ademola] Lookman, over to you.
South Africa, you will dance Amapiano after your AFCON defeat. You killed my groove. Grammy why?”
Super Eagles of Nigeria have only scored one goal at this AFCON and defeated Angola in a close game to go to the semi-finals.
However, South Africa maintained their streak of four consecutive clean sheets when goalkeeper Ronwen Williams saved the day in a penalty shootout.
Nigeria has only reached the quarterfinals once since winning the Cup of Nations just over a decade ago.
This comes after they have lost five of their previous six AFCON semi-finals.
The match between Nigeria and South Africa is slated to begin at 5 p.m. GMT on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
Nigeria appears the strongest side left in the competition with the reigning African footballer of the year upfront.
“I think Nigeria is a team who are getting better and better with every game,” said Broos.
