Atletico Madrid is gearing up for a crucial match against La Liga leaders Real Madrid this weekend, sitting just one point behind them in the standings.
However, coach Diego Simeone is directing all attention towards Tuesday’s Copa del Rey quarter-final clash with Getafe.
Currently positioned 14th in LaLiga and three points clear of the relegation zone, Getafe, under the guidance of Jose Bordalas, remains unbeaten in the new calendar year, boasting a six-match streak that includes a 1-1 draw with Barcelona. "We focus on one match at a time, one day at a time.
Our only thought is for the match tomorrow," Simeone stated to reporters on Monday, as covered by Reuters.
Simeone emphasized the distinct nature of both the coaching staff and the team.
He noted, “The recent performances against Real Sociedad, Barcelona, and Sevilla demonstrate an impressive intensity.” He acknowledged that when a team is aware of what is at stake, it becomes inherently more dangerous.
Atletico has not suffered defeat to Getafe since 2011, yet they had to exert significant effort to secure a 1-0 victory in their last encounter back in December. Securing a win against Getafe would add more matches to Atletico’s already packed schedule as they aim for their first LaLiga title since 2020-21 and seek advancement in the Champions League knockout stage.
Nevertheless, the coach remains unfazed. “Naturally, our goal is to progress and reach the Copa del Rey final,” he asserted. “I cannot envision anything other than striving to take the game to a point where we can exploit weaknesses in Getafe so we can continue in the competition.”
