LAGOS, Nigeria - Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has asserted that he continues to be a genuine member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing rumors that he has abandoned the main opposition party.
A statement released on Saturday from the media office of the PDP's presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections states, "We have noted that certain news outlets are spreading unverified information that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is leaving the People’s Democratic Party.
"We would like to clarify that the reports of Atiku defecting to another party are completely false and lack logical basis.
“Recall that Atiku Abubakar has consistently called for a coalition of opposition parties in Nigeria in anticipation of the 2027 general elections to unseat the ineffective and suffering-inducing All Progressives Congress, with the goal of providing Nigerians with a renewed opportunity for growth.
“Atiku is promoting a strong coalition that would include all opposition parties – including the PDP.
“Thus, it is misleading and baseless to claim that the Waziri is abandoning ship on the PDP. Such claims contradict the purpose of the grand coalition which the former Vice President is currently advocating alongside other notable political figures in the country. “We would therefore like to affirm clearly that Atiku remains a key and genuine member of the PDP, the principal opposition party.
“Any suggestion to the contrary is designed to mislead Nigerians about the significance of the grand coalition that is working to liberate Nigeria from the dominance of the APC.”
