The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a nationwide strike on Monday, November 13, 2023.
ASSU's strike is in solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).
ASUU president, Emmanuel Osodeke, said in a circular to the union's members that the decision was taken after a meeting of the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC).
"In solidarity with our colleagues in the NLC and TUC, and in response to the persistent failure of the government to address the demands of our union, the NEC has resolved that ASUU members should join the ongoing strike," Osodeke said.
ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022, demanding that the federal government meet several demands, including:
- The release of the N1.3 trillion revitalization fund for public universities.
- The implementation of the 2009 agreement between ASUU and the federal government.
- The payment of earned academic allowances to lecturers.
- The promotion of lecturers who have been denied promotion for years.
It is unclear how long the strike will last, but both ASUU and the federal government have said they are committed to resolving it.
Impact of the strike
The strike is expected to have a significant impact on students across all institutions in Nigeria.
The strike will also hurt the economy, as it will disrupt the education of millions of students and lead to job losses for lecturers and other university staff.
The government has said it is committed to resolving with ASUU, but it is unclear how long this will take.
