Asean Begins First-Ever Joint Military Exercises In Indonesia

POSTED ON November 8, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole
Military forces from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) initiated their inaugural joint exercises on Tuesday in Indonesia, marking a historic moment. Notably, a Myanmar representative was present at the event despite the bloc's ban on its junta leaders. While ASEAN nations have previously participated in multinational defense drills, these exercises are unique as they exclusively feature ASEAN member countries. The move comes as ASEAN grapples with concerns regarding its relevance in addressing significant regional issues, including the crisis in Myanmar and disputes in the South China Sea. The exercises, however, are non-combat in nature, focusing on areas such as humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, rescue operations, and joint maritime patrols, as confirmed by the host nation, Indonesia. Indonesian military chief Margono Yudo emphasized the importance of unity, stating, "By uniting together, we can maintain stability in the region for the favor of the people." Yudo disclosed that forces from all ASEAN member nations, including Myanmar, are participating in the five-day ASEAN Solidarity Exercise. However, the extent of Myanmar's involvement was not detailed. Myanmar has been plagued by deadly violence since 2021, following the military's coup and subsequent crackdown on dissent. ASEAN has banned junta leaders from attending its meetings, and the bloc's efforts to mediate the crisis have yet to yield results. Although some may speculate about the drills countering China's assertiveness in the South China Sea, Indonesia has denied any such intention. Beijing has drawn the ire of Southeast Asian nations, including Indonesia, for entering areas of the contested waterway they claim. China has constructed artificial islands in the region, outfitting them with military facilities and runways. In response to the exercises, China's foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated Beijing's consistent position on the South China Sea. Initially slated for the North Natuna Sea, which Indonesia asserts falls within its exclusive economic zone, the ASEAN Solidarity Exercise was moved to the South Natuna Sea after discussions between ASEAN military chiefs. This shift aimed to avoid disputed waters where China occasionally conducts patrols. Despite initial reservations, Cambodia, a key regional ally of China, is now participating in the exercises, underscoring the complexities surrounding regional dynamics and diplomatic relationships.
