Arsenal have set their sights on Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman as their main transfer target, overshadowing Athletic Club’s Nico Williams, as they aim to bolster their attacking lineup this summer.
The Nigerian international has had an outstanding season, racking up 18 goals and seven assists in 37 matches, and is anticipated to leave Bergamo after a successful three-year period under Gian Piero Gasperini.
Arsenal is among five Premier League teams planning discussions with the 27-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Newcastle United also showing an interest.
Lookman’s impressive evolution since his previous Premier League stints has drawn the attention of top European clubs. During his tenures at Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City, he netted only 11 goals in 96 appearances, but at Atalanta, he has significantly improved his tally with 50 goals in 115 games across all competitions.
His standout hat-trick in last season’s Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen underscored his talent on major occasions, and he has consistently demonstrated that high level of performance this season. Both Barcelona and Juventus have reportedly reached out to Lookman’s representatives to inquire about his potential availability; however, both clubs may struggle to meet Atalanta’s asking price, estimated to be between €60-65 million.
The financial challenges faced by Barcelona could hinder their ability to compete with wealthy Premier League teams, possibly opening up a path for Lookman to return to England. Should Arsenal secure Lookman’s signature, it may mark the conclusion of their long pursuit of Athletic Club star Nico Williams.
The Spanish international has been the Gunners’ key target for the left wing for the past year, with FootballTransfers indicating that Mikel Arteta’s team appeared most likely to finalize a deal for the 22-year-old. Nevertheless, since both Lookman and Williams prefer playing on the left side, Arsenal is anticipated to acquire only one of them, especially with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard still in the squad.
Manchester United, who have faced offensive difficulties this season with just 39 goals in 34 Premier League matches, are reportedly contemplating an audacious swap deal involving Danish striker Rasmus Højlund to acquire Lookman’s services.
