The Arewa Community in Southern Nigeria has rejected the call for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
Musa Saidu, the leader of the Arewa Community, questioned whether the Southeast killings would end if Kanu was released. In response to Iwuanyanwu's call for Kanu's release before May 29, Saidu wondered why Iwuanyanwu and others were not speaking out when Kanu was leading IPOB militants to kill innocent people in the Southeast.
"Not only in the South East but also in Port Harcourt, numerous members of the Arewa community were attacked and slain in cold blood. We have the statistics and even the images of those involved.
"What assurance are they giving that the killings won't continue if he is released, considering how loudly they are now calling for his release?"
The Department of State Services has been holding Kanu since he was brought back from Kenya to complete his prosecution for his agitation for Biafra even though he was cleared by the Court of Appeal.
