Former Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, has been expelled from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) due to allegations of engaging in anti-party activities.
Aregbesola, who served two terms as the governor of Osun State, was expelled on Wednesday through a letter signed by the APC leadership.
The letter, titled "Allegations of Anti-Party Activities – Conveyance of State Exco Decision to You," accused the former minister of violating Article 21 of the APC constitution.
"Following the investigation, the State Executive Committee (SEC) reviewed the report from the Disciplinary Committee. After careful consideration of the findings and recommendations, the SEC decided to approve your immediate expulsion from the APC.
This decision was based on clear evidence of your actions that undermined the party's unity and integrity. Consequently, you are no longer a member of the APC and must refrain from presenting yourself as one or acting on behalf of the party in any capacity," an excerpt from the letter stated.
Aregbesola's expulsion from the ruling party occurred just three days after his faction, Omoluabi Progressives, declared its intention to leave the APC.
In a statement on Sunday, the group's spokesperson, Oluwaseun Abosede, mentioned that the decision to exit the APC was made by stakeholders from all 332 wards in the state during a meeting in Ilesa, Osun State.
The group cited multiple reasons for their departure, including allegations of suspensions and expulsions of members without fair hearings, as well as feelings of neglect and disrespect within the APC structure. Led by Aregbesola, the group was also accused of contributing to the APC's defeat in the 2022 governorship election, which saw the rise of Governor Ademola Adeleke from the Peoples Democratic Party.
