The All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to select its candidate for the upcoming February 3, 2023, bye-election for the Ebonyi South Senatorial District today. The vacancy arose after Senator Dave Umahi's resignation from the Senate due to his appointment as the Minister of Works by Bola Tinubu.
The APC Committee from the National Secretariat has conducted the screening process for the primary election, with Professor Anthony Okorie Ani emerging as the sole aspirant. Two individuals, Princess Ann Agom-Eze and Prof. Ani, initially purchased forms for the primary.
Smart Iheazor, Chairman of the screening/special congress committee, revealed to reporters in Abakaliki on Friday that only Ani completed and returned his form to the party, participating in the screening on Thursday. In contrast, Agom-Eze neither returned her form nor attended the screening.
Iheazor stated, "I am the Chairman of the screening/special congress committee of Ebonyi State bye-election for the Ebonyi South senatorial seat. On Thursday, we came into Abakaliki and commenced action immediately on our assignment, successfully screening the aspirant that purchased the form from our national headquarters."
He continued, "Two persons purchased forms, and out of the two, only one person returned the completed forms. The second person did not return her forms and also did not show up for the screening despite radio and other media announcements to that effect."
The cleared candidate, Professor Anthony Okorie Ani, is now set to represent the APC in the bye-election for the Ebonyi South Senatorial District. The absence of Princess Ann Agom-Eze from the screening process solidifies Ani's position as the sole contender for the party's ticket in this electoral race.
