ABUJA,Nigeria - The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially announced that the party’s candidate for the upcoming Anambra governorship election will be selected through an indirect primary.
This information was shared by the party’s National Secretary, Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, after a recent gathering of the APC caucus and the National Executive Committee (NEC).
“As a party dedicated to due process, the NWC has decided that the primaries for the Anambra governorship election will follow the indirect model. This resolution was made after comprehensive consultations within the party’s leadership,” Basiru stated.
To keep all stakeholders informed, the APC has organized a stakeholders meeting at the party’s national headquarters on Tuesday of next week. This meeting will include the State Working Committee, state caucus, and governorship aspirants.
Regarding speculations about the primary mode for the Anambra 2025 governorship election, the NWC clarified that no prior decision had been made, despite earlier announcements suggesting that a direct primary had been chosen. “The official resolution is that the primary will be held using the indirect method.
A formal communiqué will be sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and supplementary notices will be issued to reflect this decision,” the National Secretary explained.
The party also addressed concerns about reports indicating that some key figures were not present at the NEC meeting.
Basiru made it clear that some individuals, who were not statutory members of the NEC, were inaccurately reported as absent.
“For clarity, some leaders, including former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, were present at the caucus meeting but were not part of the NEC. However, some media accounts incorrectly suggested that they were absent from the entire process.
“To enhance inclusivity, the NEC has established a committee to review the party’s constitution, particularly to consider certain political figures who are currently not statutory members of the committee,” he elaborated.
The APC NWC also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other party leaders for their efforts to strengthen internal democracy. The committee further decided to engage government appointees on the accomplishments of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“We have resolved to start discussions with government officials immediately after Ramadan to assess the progress and challenges within various ministries, departments, and agencies,” Basiru announced.
The party also reviewed its ongoing membership e-registration initiative, stating that consultants have been mobilized and essential infrastructure is being established to ensure a smooth and credible party register ahead of the next general election.
“Our aim is to create a register with integrity that can also assist us in analyzing our party's demographic structure in anticipation of future elections,” Basiru added.
With this clarification, the APC is progressing with its preparations for the Anambra governorship election set for November 8, 2025, highlighting unity, transparency, and stakeholder engagement.
