During the Computex technology trade show in Taipei, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) unveiled its latest artificial intelligence processors and outlined its strategy to develop AI chips over the next two years in an effort to compete with industry leader Nvidia.
AMD CEO Lisa Su introduced the MI325X accelerator, which is set to be released in the fourth quarter of 2024. The demand for advanced chips used in AI data centers has surged due to the race to develop generative artificial intelligence programs.
Santa Clara, California-based AMD has been striving to challenge Nvidia, which currently dominates the lucrative market for AI semiconductors with about 80% share. Nvidia has announced its intention to shorten its release cycle to annually, prompting AMD to follow suit.
Su emphasized that AI is the company's top priority and highlighted the annual cadence of new product releases to meet market demands. AMD also introduced the upcoming MI350 series, expected to be available in 2025, and the MI400 series, scheduled for release in 2026.
Investors are closely monitoring the developments in the AI chip industry, seeking longer-term updates from chip firms amidst the ongoing boom in generative AI technology. AMD's shares have significantly increased since last year.
