The prosecution witness, Rabiu Musa against the trial of Ali Bello, cousin of former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, and Dauda Suleiman on charges of alleged money laundering has fallen ill on the witness stand.
The incident took place on Tuesday in Abuja and caused a setback in the proceedings as all activities were abruptly halted due to the sudden illness reported by the prosecution witness.
The witness had identified himself as a bureau de change operator based in Abuja. Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) led Musa in evidence and submitted two record books as evidence.
During the trial, despite claiming familiarity with the defendants, Musa struggled to recall specific details of his relationship with them. He also denied knowledge of an individual named Hudu’driver, whose name appeared in one of the record books tendered by the prosecution.
Testifying through an interpreter due to his inability to communicate in English, Musa suddenly became visibly unwell midway through his testimony. Justice James Omotosho intervened, inquiring about his condition and offering assistance.
Expressing discomfort and indicating high blood pressure, Musa requested a break, which the judge granted. After being provided with water and given time to recuperate, the witness was adjourned to attend to his health and review the recorded transactions.
Consequently, the judge in charge of the case, Justice Omotosho adjourned the trial until February 13, 22, and 23 to allow for the continuation of proceedings.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) presented the case against Ali Bello and Suleiman which revolves around a 10-count charge related to money laundering.
Ali Bello, represented by Z. E Abass, and Dauda Suleiman, represented by Nureini Jimoh (SAN), remained present during the proceedings.
