Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company (AEEPCO), the operator of the NNPC/Aiteo Joint Venture on OML 29, has confirmed the detection of an oil leak at its Nembe swamp facility in OML 29, located in the Nembe Kingdom of Bayelsa State.
It was report that there is an oil spill at the Nembe Creek on OML 29 on Monday evening, which was linked to a facility operated by Aiteo Exploration and Production Limited.
However, Aiteo has acknowledged the leak through a statement issued by Ndiana Mathew, Aiteo's Media representative, stating that the leak was noticed during routine operations on Monday, June 17, 2024.
The statement also mentioned that AEEPCO's Oil Spill and Emergency Response Team was immediately activated, leading to the shutdown of all production from OML 29 as a precautionary measure. The cause of the spill is currently unknown, but AEEPCO is actively working with stakeholders to mitigate its immediate effects.
AEEPCO's Group Managing Director, Victor Okoronkwo, stated that a Joint Investigative Visit (JIV) with stakeholders has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident.
The relevant regulators, including The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), have been notified of the incident.
The company's current priority is to expedite an efficient spill management process in accordance with regulatory standards and collaborate with all stakeholders to restore production and mitigate associated risks.
