The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has acknowledged that the problem of extortion of passengers by officials at the nation’s airports is beyond the control of the ministry.
However, Keyamo stated that the aviation ministry is collaborating with other relevant ministers and agencies to address this issue.
He emphasized that most of the agencies involved in this problem are not under the control of the aviation ministry, but efforts are being made to find a solution in collaboration with other government arms.
Keyamo also mentioned that practical steps to address this issue will be announced soon, and that the ministry is working with the National Security Adviser on this matter.
The problem of begging and extortion at airports has become a major concern for the Federal Government, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has issued a warning against offering bribes and encouraging extortion.
The agency also announced measures to punish any staff or government agency found guilty of accepting bribes at the airports.
On June 14, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria cautioned airport users about the act of giving bribes and promoting extortion.
The organization declared that any employee or government entity working at the airports who is caught accepting bribes would be subject to punishment.
Additionally, the agency revealed the establishment of a task force aimed at eradicating touting, extortion, and other unlawful activities at airports across the country.
The authority specified that the task force was given the duty of ensuring compliance among airport personnel and promoting a professional environment at every rank.
