The National Leader of Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has urged both the nation’s leadership and its citizens to reconsider the foundational principles of federalism outlined in the 1963 Constitution, which he refers to as the blueprint for national unity and lasting advancement.
In a statement made on Wednesday to commemorate June 12, he advocated for a return to the 1963 Republican Constitution, asserting that it offers the necessary framework for genuine federalism, allowing Nigeria’s diverse regions to function with a certain level of autonomy.
“To establish a lasting framework for unity and growth in the country, federalism permits the various components of the nation to exercise autonomy or self-determination as seen in the First Republic,” he remarked.
He characterized the current system as overly centralized and inadequate for Nigeria's intricate needs, advocating that true federalism would foster balanced development and alleviate regional tensions.
While acknowledging the achievement of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, Fasoranti stressed the necessity for structural reforms to enhance democratic practices in Nigeria.
He recognized the sacrifices made by pro-democracy groups that fought for civil governance restoration, noting, “There is no doubt that the continued and uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 stems from the sacrifices and dedication of our heroes and heroines in civil society and other well-meaning compatriots, who, alongside Afenifere, united in the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, to serve as the champions of progressive forces that facilitated the return of democracy and the inception of the Fourth Republic.”
Fasoranti expressed optimism about the ongoing vitality of progressive movements, asserting that he is confident the progressive spirit will persist in upholding and nurturing democratic values in Nigeria.
Addressing the ongoing insecurity affecting the nation, he remarked that despite current efforts, the country remains besieged by violent non-state actors.
He suggested establishing State Police and Community Policing as realistic and urgent solutions to tackle insecurity.
Fasoranti stated, “We, in Afenifere, agree with the sentiments of many patriotic Nigerians that setting up State Police and monitoring internal collaborators seem to be the remedy for this scourge that makes living or traveling in certain regions of the country a nightmare.
I therefore use this opportunity to call on both the federal and state governments to implement the State Police and Community Policing system.”
He concluded by reminding Nigerians of the deeper significance of June 12 and the importance of overcoming divisions in the pursuit of a greater national purpose.
