British actor, Idris Elba is poised to play Okonkwo, the protagonist of Chinua Achebe's famous novel Things Fall Apart, in a new TV series adaption by American entertainment company A24.
Variety reported exclusively on the development, saying that, while no writer is presently engaged in the project, the adaptation is still in its early stages and has yet to obtain a streaming service or network.
According to Variety, the official synopsis of "Things Fall Apart" is the "story of Okonkwo (Elba), one of literature's most iconic characters—a fearless African warrior and leader who is steadfast in preserving his people and culture."
As British colonizers disrupt his world, Okonkwo’s struggle to maintain power and tradition spirals into a heart-wrenching confrontation. His fierce resolve, a fatal flaw in the face of unstoppable change, makes him an unforgettable character, embodying the tension between strength, vulnerability, and adaptability.”
Elba will work as an executive producer alongside Gina Carter under the 22Summers production label.
Elba, who will also produce the series, is most recognized for his work on Thor, The Suicide Squad, Pacific Rim, and Beasts of No Nation.
The renowned actor has received accolades for his roles in prominent television shows such as The Wire and Luther.
He also played Nelson Mandela in the 2013 biographical picture Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
