49 Students Hospitalised As School Bus, Tow Truck Collide In Pennsylvania

POSTED ON December 1, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole
A devastating incident unfolded on Wednesday morning when a school bus, transporting 49 students to Bear Creek Community Charter School for their second day of the term, collided head-on with a tow truck in Bear Creek Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The collision left nearly 50 students injured and raised concerns about the safety of school transportation. According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred just after 8 a.m. on Route 115. State police Captain Patrick Dougherty explained during a press conference that the tow truck driver, identified as 28-year-old Edward Edward Steinmann, is believed to have suffered a medical event, causing him to veer over the median strip and collide with the school bus. Both drivers, Suzanne Ent, 53, the bus driver, and Edward Steinmann, were transported to the hospital with moderate injuries. The 49 students, ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade, sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital on a separate school bus for evaluation. Footage from the crash site revealed significant damage to the front of the school bus, highlighting the severity of the impact. While this incident was undoubtedly tragic, Captain Dougherty expressed gratitude that there were no reports of serious injuries. He extended thanks to the bystanders who stopped to offer assistance and aid during the aftermath of the collision. Parents of the injured students have been notified, and the school administration has initiated the process of reuniting students with their families. Jim Smith, CEO of Bear Creek Community Charter School, reported that, as of Wednesday afternoon, four students remained in the hospital with moderate injuries. Captain Dougherty confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and the events leading up to it. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of school bus safety and the need for continued vigilance in protecting students during their daily commutes.
