President Bola Tinubu convened a meeting on Saturday evening with prominent members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, which many interpret as a proactive step towards a political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The gathering took place at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and included his close associates, primarily former members of the defunct G5 Governors a group that distanced itself from the PDP leadership during the last electoral cycle.
It is worth noting that the G5 governors, under Wike's leadership as the outgoing governor of Rivers State, opposed the PDP's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and instead supported Tinubu, the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 elections.
Following the elections, Tinubu appointed Wike, a PDP member, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in August 2023.
Also attending the meeting were former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, and two members of the now-defunct G5, former governors of Benue and Abia States, Samuel Ortom and Okezie Ikpeazu, respectively. While the details of their discussions remain confidential, sources indicate that the focus was on finding ways to collaborate and incorporate the former governors into the present political landscape.
