As the 2027 election approaches, Peter Obi, the Labour Party's (LP) presidential candidate for 2023, states that there is currently no merger agreement with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political party.
The former governor of Anambra State made this statement on Thursday morning during a press conference in Abuja regarding the nation's condition.
He mentioned that no agreements have been made with other political parties as of now.
He urged all Nigerians who care about the political landscape to unite in 2027 to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of mismanaging the nation's resources.
Obi characterized the security situation in the country as dire, lamenting that Nigerians are dying unnecessarily due to banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping for ransom.
He remarked that the level of corruption in Nigeria remains significant, as does the cost of governance, which has resulted in a dramatic rise in public debt under the current leadership of President Bola Tinubu from the APC.
Obi pointed out that government officials deliberately mismanaged public funds in 2024 through frequent foreign trips.
In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu emerged victorious in 12 out of Nigeria's 36 states and garnered substantial votes in several other states, achieving a total of 8,794,726 votes nearly two million more than his nearest competitor, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
Atiku, who has run for president six times, received 6,984,520 votes, while Obi, a first-time candidate, achieved a remarkable 6,101,533 votes.
Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP, the former governor of Kano State, finished in fourth place, winning in his state with 1,496,687 votes.
